FreeSpace E4 system firmware determines how the E4 system operates and performs certain functions.  Several versions of firmware have been released, and the FreeSpace E4 firmware information page describes the purpose of the firmware and compatibilities with various versions of the FreeSpace Installer software.

The firmware discussed on this page is the firmware that was included with production release versions of the FreeSpace^® Installer™ software.  Information regarding Firmware releases associated with a specific beta release of the FreeSpace Installer software can be found on the FreeSpace Installer beta information pages.

What is the FreeSpace E4 Firmware?

The FreeSpace E4 system contains firmware for the microcontroller, DSP, peripheral controller and the two amplifier sections.  The microcontroller code is the main component and determines how the E4 will operate.  All firmware is installed and tested at the time of manufacture.  The microcontroller code can be updated using the FreeSpace Installer software as new features or bug fixes become available.

How do I determine the version of firmware in my E4 system?

Use the FreeSpace Installer software connect to the E4 in question.  Select the Service Hardware mode.  The current firmware version for the microprocessor is displayed at the start of the service log.

How do I upgrade the firmware within my E4 system?

Using the FreeSpace Installer software it is possible to upgrade the microcontroller code.  Before you begin the upgrade process you should check the E4 firmware compatibility matrix to determine if your E4 system is compatible with the latest version of the microcontroller code.

Select the version you will be using and download it to your PC.  Using the FreeSpace Installer software select the “Flash Configuration” button while holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys.  This will begin the firmware upgrade process.  Complete instructions on how to upgrade the Firmware of a FreeSpace E4 system are included in the FreeSpace E4 Owner’s Guide and the on line help system of the FreeSpace Installer software.

• Changed Page Enable default to OFF for each system zone.
• Implemented new band pass EQ for default EQ for improved protection against loudspeaker transformer saturation.
• Fixed bug that caused out of range value to be reported to FreeSpace Installer.
• Modified Page Gain to disable Auto Volume at time page is triggered and restore Auto Volume operation after completion of page.
• Implemented new output limiter settings to provide improved protection against High Frequency Sense Fault.

Past Release Versions:

• AGC time constants have been adjusted to reduce reported "pumping."
• Notice that there are two versions of host code included with this distribution. The xxx100Vxxx version should be used when the E4 is configured as a 100V amplifier. The xxx70Vxxx version should be used when the E4 is configured as a 70V amplifier.
• The DEQ bug that added ~2dB of gain when DEQ was enabled, and the Zone gain has been set to 0 (maximum) has been fixed.
• The wall plate scanning rate has been changed so that a single button press no longer results in multiple 2dB volume changes.
• The default value for the 12V output on the Aux-Output connector has been changed. This output is now On (12V) when the E4 is On.
